It is less about polished boat interiors and more about the decisions that determine reliability, noise, energy use and the quality of a passage years after delivery.
Start with energy. Ask how a system behaves at anchor, not only how much power it produces on paper. Compare battery chemistry, charging cycles, generator load and the service network in your intended cruising area. A smaller, well-integrated system can be more useful than a larger one that adds complexity or depends on specialists who are difficult to reach.
Navigation deserves the same attention. A clean display is not automatically a safe bridge. Look for a coherent arrangement that supports a proper lookout, clear alarms and sensible redundancy. Ask what happens if one screen fails, where the independent data comes from and how a new crew member learns the system. The most reassuring equipment is often the equipment that makes the next action obvious.
Finally, ask about integration. Pumps, ventilation, stabilisers, watermakers and monitoring systems should communicate without making the owner dependent on a single proprietary interface. Request manuals, service schedules and a parts plan before signing off a refit. Technology is successful when it becomes quiet background support for the life you want on the water.
